- The Color Tree -

A Color Wheel shows only 1 of the 3 color attributes - Hue. A Color Tree maps each of the 3 color attributes (Hue, Saturation and Value), to one of 3 physical dimensions.

The Color Tree concept was developed and elaborated by Albert Henry Munsell in the early 1900's and his color annotation system became known at the Munsell Color Tree.

In such models, the Hues are arranged as radials, looking down from the top, in a similar way to a Color Wheel. Saturation (which Munsell called "Chroma") is the radial distance from the center. Value is on the vertical scale.
